I haven’t seen Anora yet (can’t wait!) but I have seen the trailer – and it immediately made me think of one of my all-time favourite books.
Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper by Diablo Cody is my instant recommendation if someone wants a funny book.
Cody is a bookish girl looking for a change, and her foray into the sex industry reads like an investigative journalist describing their adventures in a foreign land. Her razor-sharp observations of the customers, her co-workers, and the industry are straight-up hysterical. Cody writes about the strange “David Lynch-ian” atmosphere of the strip club day shift, stuns a Russian client by conversing in his native tongue (she minored in Russian at college) and listens to the laments of a customer who has lost his lucrative business due to the cold (he’d been mowing lawns).
Cody’s writing is personable and witty. At times she’s stunned by the weirdness of the strip-club world, but she also celebrates the female friendships she makes, and the strength she develops both physically and emotionally during her year of dancing.
Given Cody’s amazing track record in film and TV (Juno, Young Adult, The United States of Tara) I am desperate for a TV series of Candy Girl. Diablo, if you’re reading this – please deliver! It would be such a fantastic accompaniment to this incredibly entertaining memoir.
