Storms & Saints Jewellery in front of a stormy sea

Interview With Storms & Saints Founder, Ainhoa Herrero

What first drew you to jewellery design, and how did Storms & Saint come to life?
Jewellery design found me at a time when I was searching for something more fulfilling. I’ve always been drawn to both art and jewellery, seeing it as a powerful form of self-expression. When I first experimented with metalsmithing, I instantly fell in love with the process of transforming silver into something meaningful and personal.

Storms & Saint was born from that passion, but also from a desire to create jewellery that allows people to express their individuality. I wanted each piece to speak on a deeper level, whether through inspiration from nature, mythology, or the personal stories we carry with us.

Your pieces are deeply inspired by nature. Can you share a specific landscape, moment, or element of the natural world that has influenced your designs?
Nature is a constant source of inspiration for me, but a specific moment that stands out was when I was hiking through Delamere Forest.

I always carry my sketchbook with me, and I remember sitting on a rock, completely immersed in the surroundings and in that moment, I started sketching designs that would later become some of my favourite pieces in the shop, like the Verdalia and Eden rings.

I’m also deeply fascinated by storms, their raw, untamed energy and the way they transform the landscape. That dramatic beauty, the balance between chaos and calm, is something I often try to capture in my jewellery.

How does storytelling play a role in your work? Do you design with a particular narrative in mind, or do your creations evolve organically
Storytelling is at the heart of my work, but the way it unfolds varies with each piece. Sometimes, I have a clear narrative in mind, whether it’s inspired by mythology, nature, or a specific emotion I want to capture, and I design with that vision from the start. Other times, the process is more organic. I’ll sit at my bench, play around with the materials, and let the piece take shape intuitively.

I love that balance between structure and spontaneity.

You describe your work as wearable art. How do you balance artistry with functionality in your designs?
When I started in the jewellery business, one of my main priorities was making jewellery that’s not only beautiful but also comfortable to wear. I know how overwhelming it can feel when a piece is too heavy, bulky, or restrictive, I’ve experienced it myself, and I know many others have too. That’s why every design goes through what I call a testing process.

Once I finish a piece, I wear it for a period of time to ensure it feels good on the skin, sits well, and is comfortable for everyday wear. If something needs adjusting, whether it’s weight, balance, or fit, I refine it before releasing it. Since all my pieces are made to order, this process ensures that each one isn’t just a piece of art but something that can be comfortably worn and truly enjoyed.

Can you walk us through your creative process, from concept to finished piece?
Every piece begins with an idea, which I first bring to life through a mood board. This helps me capture the essence of what I want to create, the inspiration, the feeling, and the story behind it. Once I have that foundation, I start refining the key elements that will shape the design, selecting the best techniques to bring it to life. Depending on the piece, I might use classic silversmithing techniques, wax carving, or silver clay, and this decision-making stage is often the longest part of the process.

When I start physically creating the piece, the design sometimes evolves. Certain elements may not work as I originally envisioned, or I might add new details that enhance the final look. I keep refining and adjusting until I’m 100% happy with the result, only then is it ready to be shared with the world.

What techniques or tools are essential to your work as a metalsmith?
As a metalsmith, my work relies on a combination of traditional and modern techniques, depending on the design I’m creating. Classic silversmithing techniques like sawing, soldering, and stone setting are at the core of my process, allowing me to shape and refine each piece by hand. I also work with wax carving, which is perfect for creating intricate, organic designs before casting them in silver, as well as silver clay for more sculptural and textured elements.

Some of the essential tools in my workshop include my jeweller’s saw, torch, hammers, files, and burnishers, they are simple yet powerful tools that bring raw materials to life. But beyond the physical tools, patience and adaptability are just as important. Every piece is a process of trial, error, and I love how each technique brings its own unique character to my work.

Do you have a favourite piece you’ve created? What makes it special to you?
It’s always hard to pick a favourite, but if I had to, it would probably be our Devour ring. It’s part of a collection I’m excited to talk about in more detail later, but what makes this piece so special to me is its depth. The Devour ring is a powerful representation of love and elegance, combining those two elements in a way that feels timeless. Every curve and detail was designed to evoke emotion, and when I see it, I’m reminded of the energy and intention behind its creation. It’s a piece that truly resonates with the themes I explore in my work, and I’m proud of how it turned out.

How do you approach designing bespoke pieces, particularly engagement and statement jewellery?
Creating bespoke jewellery is one of my favourite aspects of what I do. I love hearing my customers’ ideas and the meaning behind their requests, it’s always exciting to be a part of something so personal. I make it a priority to understand exactly what they’re envisioning, whether it’s a specific gemstone, shape, or concept.

The process is very collaborative. We start with a few sketches to bring their ideas to life, and from there, we communicate every step of the way, refining the design together. I encourage my customers to be involved throughout, adding or removing elements as needed, until they see their vision reflected in the piece. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the finished design holds such significance for them, whether it’s for an engagement or a statement piece they’ll treasure for years.

I also work with memorial pieces, which are some of the most challenging but also the most fulfilling designs. These pieces hold a physical element, such as ashes, hair, or flowers, and it’s incredibly important to me that they look exactly how the customer envisions them. The care and attention that goes into memorial jewellery make it a deeply emotional and meaningful process for both the customer and myself.

Sustainability is an important part of your brand. What steps do you take to ensure ethical sourcing of gemstones and responsible metalworking practices?
Sustainability is a core value of Storms & Saint, and I take great care in ensuring that all the materials I work with are ethically sourced. I’m lucky enough to collaborate with family-owned suppliers from all over the world, and it has taken years of research and countless video calls to build relationships with those who share the same commitment to ethical practices. I ensure that the gemstones they mine are sourced responsibly, with a focus on safe and fair working conditions for everyone involved, this is something I’m incredibly proud of.

In terms of metalworking, I use recycled silver wherever possible, which not only reduces the environmental impact but also ensures that the silver is sourced responsibly. Additionally, I’m conscious of minimising waste during the crafting process, and I recycle any leftover materials to avoid unnecessary consumption. These practices are part of a larger commitment to sustainability that is reflected in every piece I create.

What are some challenges you’ve faced in maintaining sustainability in your craft, and how have you navigated them?
One of the challenges I’ve faced in maintaining sustainability in my craft is finding ways to reduce energy consumption during the production process. As much as I strive to use eco-friendly materials, metalworking techniques such as casting and soldering can be energy-intensive. To navigate this, I’ve been looking into more energy-efficient tools and methods to minimise my carbon footprint.

Additionally, there’s always the challenge of customer expectations, many customers aren’t always aware of the effort that goes into ensuring a piece is sustainably made. Educating my clients on the importance of ethical sourcing and the impact of sustainable practices has become a key part of my process. It can be a challenge to find the balance between meeting demand and staying true to my values, but it’s something I work through by being transparent and sharing my journey with them.

How do you see the jewellery industry evolving in terms of ethical and sustainable practices?
I see the jewellery industry moving towards a future where sustainability and ethical practices are no longer the exception, but the standard. As consumers become more conscious of the environmental and social impact of their purchases, there’s growing pressure for brands to be transparent about where their materials come from and how they are made.

I believe that in the coming years, we’ll see more innovations in sustainable materials, from lab-grown gemstones to recycled metals, which will make it easier for brands to operate responsibly without compromising on quality or design. There will also be a continued shift towards more circular models, where jewellery is made to last and can be reimagined, recycled, or repurposed over time.

However, there’s still a long way to go. While many brands are making strides, it’s important that we continue to push for industry-wide change by supporting artisans and companies who are committed to ethical practices, encouraging transparency, and investing in sustainable technologies. I think the more we share knowledge and set higher standards, the more we can create a truly responsible jewellery industry.

How do you want people to feel when they wear a piece from Storms & Saint?
When someone wears a piece from us, I want them to feel both connected to something deeper and empowered by their own unique story. Each piece is designed not just as an accessory, but as a symbol of personal expression, whether it’s inspired by nature, mythology, or something close to their heart. I want them to feel a sense of strength and elegance, knowing that the jewellery they wear has meaning and has been crafted with intention.

I also hope that wearing our jewellery creates a sense of confidence, like they’re wearing a piece of art that speaks to their individuality and values. Ultimately, I want people to feel like they’re carrying a part of themselves with them, whether they’re making a statement, marking a special moment, or simply enjoying the beauty of a hand-made piece.

What values define your brand beyond aesthetics?
Beyond aesthetics, Storms & Saint is defined by values of sustainability, authenticity, and personal connection. I’m deeply committed to ethical sourcing, ensuring that every piece is not only beautiful but also made with care for the environment and the people who create it.

Authenticity is another cornerstone of the brand. Every design is an expression of creativity and intention, and I believe in creating pieces that speak to the individuality of the wearer. It’s important to me that each piece has meaning and is crafted to last, whether it’s a bespoke design or part of a collection.

Lastly, personal connection is key. I want Storms & Saint to be more than just a jewellery brand; I want it to be a space where customers feel valued and understood.I want the wearer to feel like their story is being told and celebrated.

Your brand name, Storms & Saint, is intriguing. What’s the story behind it?
The name Storms & Saint is a reflection of the perfect blend of chaos and calm, symbolised by the phrase “where the storm meets the saint.” In literature, this phrase is often used to depict the intersection of contrasting forces, where turmoil or passion (the storm) encounters purity, peace, or wisdom (the saint). It represents the convergence of two opposites that, when brought together, create something whole, balanced, and profound.

It’s in the space where chaos and calm coexist that transformation can occur.

For Storms & Saint, this duality is reflected in the designs, each piece balances strength with elegance, wildness with grace, and darkness with light. It’s about embracing both the fierce and the serene in life and celebrating their coexistence in every unique creation.

Are there any new collections or projects on the horizon that you’re excited about?
I’m really excited about my Evermore Designs collection, which is already live! It’s a shift towards more refined pieces, aimed at celebrating special moments like engagements, anniversaries, or any significant milestones. Each design is crafted with timeless elegance, perfect for those who want a piece that feels both meaningful and sophisticated.

I’m also working with new gemstone cuts, especially faceted stones, which have added a whole new dimension to the collection. These cuts bring more sparkle and depth to the designs, making them even more striking. While the collection is live, I’m slowly adding new pieces, so there’s always something fresh to look forward to!

What advice would you give to aspiring jewellery designers looking to build a brand rooted in artistry and sustainability?
To aspiring jewellery designers looking to build a brand rooted in artistry and sustainability, my advice would be to start by staying true to your vision and values. Artistry is about expressing your unique perspective, so don’t be afraid to experiment and develop your own voice in design. Trust your creativity and don’t rush the process of finding your style, let it evolve naturally.

Sustainability is equally important, and it’s essential to make ethical choices from the very beginning. Take the time to research your materials and establish relationships with suppliers who share your values. Ethical sourcing and responsible practices may take more effort upfront, but they’re incredibly rewarding and will resonate with customers who care about the origins of their jewellery.

Also, don’t underestimate the importance of storytelling. People want to connect with what they wear, so make sure the stories behind your pieces shine through in your branding, marketing, and customer interactions. Build a brand that’s transparent, honest, and consistent in its commitment to both artistry and sustainability.

Finally, be patient. Building a brand takes time, and it’s important to stay committed to your values even when it feels challenging. Keep learning, keep improving, and always stay authentic to what you believe in.
