Walking the streets of Cortona, you can’t help but feel you are treading the steps of the Etruscans, who originally founded the town. Indeed, many historical and architectural posits left behind by the Etruscans can still be found in Cortona to this day.

If art is more your thing, you might hear stories of the late Renaissance painter Fra Angelico visiting Cortona as told by the CortonaMia tourism portal. The region itself although steeped in Etruscan history was put on the modern map by the movie, based on the book written by Frances Mayes, Under the Tuscan Sun, which was filmed in and around Cortona.

The streets and Palazzo Passerini itself are truly inspiring places to rest, recuperate, and get creative. Whether that be writing your memoirs, painting small frescoes, or enjoying time with friends while drinking Tuscan wine, the Palazzo Passerini has space for everybody.

According to The Hotel Guru, the meticulously restored 15th-century palazzo seamlessly blends old-world charm with modern comforts. Rooms and suites are a testament to timeless elegance, featuring bespoke furniture and original features, including frescoed ceilings, handmade terracotta floors, and original wooden doors. Spread across two floors the palazzo features two magnificent double suites, plus a twin room and study, two huge marble bathrooms, a bespoke handmade kitchen fully equipped with Smeg appliances, and an elegant sitting room. With its own private entrance and sleeping up to six in total, it’s the perfect discreet escape for a friend or family gathering or for couples travelling together and looking for plenty of privacy and space.

Employing local craftspeople and sustainable suppliers to make your stay in Cortona memorable

Local Tuscan artisans and craftspeople were given the task of renovating the now air-conditioned Palazzo Passerini residence, located in Cortona, Italy, in a collaboration between the architect English owners.

However, it’s the small details that make Palazzo Passerini an ideal place to stay when you’re visiting Cortona. Bed linens are woven locally by the world-famous Busatti factory, founded in 1842 and continue to create textiles in a time honored tradition. The Busatti factory offers tours of their facilities and is only a short drive away from Lazzo Passerini. Tosconova, whose ethics include using leather-free principles and eco-feathers for furniture, sofa’s have been used within the rooms of the Palazzo. Taking it one step further, Palazzo Passerini offers Farmacia Santa Maria Novella body and bath products in their rooms. Farmacia Santa Maria Novella which is in itself a company steeped in history, going back to 1221.

As a guest at Palazzo Passerini, you are welcome to either create your own itinerary or have Passerini curate a specialised itinerary tailored to your needs. Sojourns can include visits to the nearby hilltop towns of Pienza, famous for its Pecorino Cheese production, Montalcino, a medieval town famous for producing Brunello di Montalcino wine. Suggested Itineraries for Cortona and its surrounds

According to Palazzo Passerini, the first day in Cortona should involve a walking tour, immersing yourself in the medieval streets and drinking coffee in the squares. Lunch can be spent eating in one of the local restaurants and sampling the wine produced in the region.

After lunch, a gentle stroll through the town where many local artisans and craftspeople produce handmaid shoes, jewellery, and hand-painted Tuscan pottery, in the town of Cortona proper, can be found.

While we recommend underconsumption core at PLEB, collecting one or two pieces for your home or body that are well made, in small lots, by local artisans is definitely inline with a more sustainable shopping ethos.

You can finish the evening by eating in one of Cortona’s local restaurants, or if you’ve taken a cooking class, perhaps you will be eating dinner made by your own hands.
