Interview With Morgan Lacaisse, Founder of Diatome

What inspired you to create Diatome, and what specific problems were you aiming to solve?
Diatome was born from personal experience. While helping my mother sell clothes on a premium marketplace, I noticed a gap in the second-hand market. Why shouldn’t brands take responsibility for reselling their own products? This insight led to developing an e-commerce solution enabling brands to manage their second-hand market directly, providing consumers with a holistic experience and allowing brands to retain control over their products.

What led you to focus on fashion resale as a key area for Diatome, and how do you see your platform shaping the future of this industry?
The popularity of resale platforms and shifts in consumer buying behaviour highlighted the potential in this market. The second-hand industry is growing rapidly, projected to double by 2027. Diatome helps brands reclaim their resale channels instead of relying on third-party platforms.

Can you explain the core functionality of Diatome and how it enhances customer-to-customer interactions?
Our platform integrates seamlessly with a brand’s existing shopping experience. Customers can buy new and second-hand items in one basket. For resale, we streamline the process: past purchases appear in the customer’s account, and they can list items with just a few clicks. Sellers receive vouchers for future purchases or can donate the value to a partner charity. This professional approach eliminates direct buyer-seller interactions, ensuring a smooth experience.

Integrated Technology

What makes Diatome unique compared to other solutions in the market?
Diatome stands out by offering brands the ability to integrate a customer-to-customer marketplace directly into their website within hours. We enable customers to purchase new and used items in a unified transaction, preserving the brand’s ecosystem without requiring additional marketing or SEO efforts.

How does Diatome ensure seamless integration with different platforms and industries?
Our solution is designed to blend effortlessly with brands’ existing ecosystems. Second-hand collections are merchandised like new ones, adhering to the brand’s visual identity. This natural integration ensures that Diatome remains invisible to end-users while adapting to various business sectors.

Can you share examples of industries that benefit most from Diatome’s solutions?
Sustainable, durable goods are particularly well-suited for our model, including eyewear, toys, decorative items, and childcare equipment. These products often retain value and have longer lifespans, making them ideal for resale. Our platform helps brands in these sectors enter the circular economy and strengthen customer loyalty.

What challenges did you face in developing Diatome, and how did you overcome them?
The two primary challenges were convincing brands of resale’s potential for customer acquisition and addressing fears of cannibalising first-hand sales. By integrating second-hand seamlessly with new products and demonstrating that resale markets already exist independently, we showed brands the value of participating in this space.

How do you ensure data security and user privacy?
Diatome limits personal data collection to what’s essential for resale processes, such as parcel management. Our systems are built to meet industry security standards, ensuring data protection.

What role does sustainability play in Diatome’s vision?
Sustainability is central to our mission, focusing on environmental impact reduction, economic value creation, and social inclusivity. By extending product lifespans and fostering a circular economy, we aim to transform commerce responsibly.

Are there any upcoming features you’re excited about?
We’re working on allowing users to purchase second-hand products directly from new product pages when available. This feature promotes sustainable consumption by making second-hand options more visible.

What advice would you give businesses considering customer-to-customer platforms?
The second-hand market presents an opportunity for brands to engage with new customers and enhance loyalty. With Diatome’s turnkey solution, integrating a resale marketplace is straightforward and effective.

If you could distil Diatome’s mission into one sentence, what would it be?
Our mission is to help brands transition to sustainable economic models through innovative technologies, reducing their carbon footprint, increasing revenue, and diversifying their customer base.

Notes on ESPR, price Point & Shipping

Diatome acknowledges that it is only part of the solution when it comes to addressing the EU Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), particularly the waste management aspects. The ESPR is an extensive and multifaceted framework, and no single solution can fully meet its diverse requirements. However, Diatome plays a significant role by improving product reusability and enabling brands to embrace circular practices, contributing to the broader goals of sustainability and responsible resource management.

When it comes to pricing, Diatome offers flexible models tailored to the needs of its clients, making it accessible for brands of varying sizes. Through its integration with Shopify, two pricing options are available: a success-based model with no subscription fee, charging only per lead and commission per sale, plus a setup fee, or a subscription-based model, with additional commission per sale and setup costs. This flexibility allows brands to choose a model that aligns with their business goals while ensuring a positive return on investment. Over the past six months, Diatome has demonstrated its effectiveness as a customer acquisition and loyalty channel, with measurable benefits for its partners.

Regarding shipping, Diatome currently supports most of Western Europe, including the UK, but does not extend to international shipping beyond this region, such as to Canada or the US. International shipping can be complex, particularly in the resale market, where pricing and margins are often tight. By focusing on Western Europe, Diatome ensures that its shipping processes remain efficient and cost-effective for its clients.

About the Diatome Resale Platform

Diatome is a pioneering e-commerce solution designed to seamlessly integrate second-hand marketplaces directly into a brand’s existing platform. By leveraging innovative technology, Diatome empowers brands to reclaim control over their resale channels, providing a unified shopping experience where customers can purchase both new and pre-owned items in a single transaction.

The platform simplifies the resale process by automatically linking past purchases to customer accounts, enabling effortless listing and resale. Sellers receive compensation through vouchers or can choose to donate the value to a partner charity. This professional approach eliminates direct buyer-seller interactions, ensuring a streamlined and secure experience.

Diatome’s unique customer-to-customer (C-to-C) model reduces the need for additional infrastructure like warehouses and complex logistics, making it a cost-effective and sustainable solution. Its adaptability across industries—from fashion and eyewear to home goods and childcare equipment—highlights its versatility in supporting brands’ entry into the circular economy. At its core, Diatome is not just about resale; it’s about fostering sustainability, enhancing customer loyalty, and shaping a more responsible retail future.
